Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 22-Apr-2023 01:38:41 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: @GettingCooked I feed an organic seed mix for layer hens from New Country Organics. I also cut greens to throw in their area and plant the edges so I can move the fence around and give them new grassy areas through the summer. Other than that whatever bugs they can find. The different colors are different breeds of chicken. We used to have some really dark shelled layers but predators got them. There are also turkey and duck eggs in the basket (along with some left over chicken I didn't put in cartons) -

I really does turn out that way. Big reason why I bumped myself up to six eggs a day.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

gettingcooked@noagendasocial.com's status on Saturday, 22-Apr-2023 01:40:27 JST GettingCooked @thatguyoverthere So cool. We're planning on getting a few birds, but probably not until next spring, as I've a million other projects to finish. And a coop to build.

At the time I didn't have a coop, but I had purchased all other kinds of equipment (including an incubator) in preparation and even had found a coop that I wanted to base mine on. When I informed Jen that I had all this stuff she pushed me to go ahead and find eggs to incubate so that I would **have** to build the coop. We're on our 7th year now (April 1st 2016 is the date I had the kids help me move the coop from the garage). -
Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 22-Apr-2023 02:00:46 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: @GettingCooked I usually will run meat birds separately from my main flock. These girls are just layers. Generally meat is harvested before they even start laying (around 8 weeks with the ones you see at the grocery store). As they age the meat gets tougher and by 2 or 3 years they are probably best in a soup if you are going to eat them (dogs don't mind at all though). My heritage breed birds take a bit longer (maybe 6 months) before they are a good size for meat. I might run a few extra chicken eggs in the small amount of free space I have in one of my incubators this sunday (they hatch in less time than the other birds).
When I do meat birds, I have a "chicken tractor" that I pull around near the garden area and outside of the fenced in flock area where weeds pop up and let them scratch them to death. I have to do some repairs on the tractor this year (pretty good for almost a decade) so it's just being used to cover a small patch of rye at the moment. I've used it for rabbits too but I had one year where they kept digging out and I had to round up bunnies across the property too many times. -
gettingcooked@noagendasocial.com's status on Saturday, 22-Apr-2023 02:00:47 JST GettingCooked @thatguyoverthere So you have layers and meat birds? We're on a regular sized building lot and only have room for maybe 4 hens. We eat a fair bit of eggs, but I must feed my dogs something like 30 scrambled eggs a week.

Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 22-Apr-2023 02:02:32 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: @GettingCooked you can expect about an egg a day during the summer from a healthy laying chicken. You get less in the winter because it's tied to the amount of sunlight they are exposed to. Factory farms put them under lamps to trick their bodies into cranking out full production all year long. I just take less in the winter. -
Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 22-Apr-2023 02:07:03 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: @CrushBead yeah we get a lot of eggs this time of year. Our turkey and geese are seasonal layers so theirs will probably sputter out soon, but the chickens are cranking them out. I don't think we're quite at full production yet, but not far off. I might try and pickle some. I love pickled eggs, but their kind of a pain because you can't have any tears in the whites. Shelling hardboiled eggs is kind of hit or miss for me. Sometimes I end up losing half of the egg along with the shell. -
