Google has a very short Chromebook support policy that's both per model and arbitrary as shit. It's nothing like the Microsoft Windows support model where Windows 10 will be supported for X years, and you can't upgrade a Chromebook to run a newer OS. -

They still have the issue of having basically no replaceable parts if something does end up breaking, and all of the other general chromebook issues, of course. I bought one that was extremely cheap in 2016 and it's still working fine, aside from its low end hardware struggling to handle most of the modern web. I needed a laptop, and figured I'd buy something cheap as a stopgap and replace it with something better when it inevitably failed, but it ended up lasting me for far longer than I expected it would. -

Complete non-issue for someone who installs linux on them, but that's probably less that 0.1% of chromebook buyers (especially considering how many schools/students buy them). The arm ones can run custom oses. -
arcanicanis (arcanicanis@were.social)'s status on Saturday, 22-Apr-2023 03:26:42 JST arcanicanis At least it makes a very very cheap source of Linux netbooks, at least for any Intel architecture Chromebooks. Got a Dell convertible tablet Chromebook for like $20 that a lawyer was trying to sell off (and immaculate condition and battery life), since it was EOL by Google, just reloaded the firmware with un-Googled coreboot, and now it's a durable little Linux netbook for field use. Previous Chromebook I have has been repurposed for solely-offline key management.
Substantially cheaper, more portable/durable, and far greater availability than trying to do the same with a RasPi or other SBCs for purpose-dedicated hardware.
