@MisterRogersSnapped True story about the Freedirds:
They were in the WWF very briefly in 1984. While traveling to a show in Calgary with Andre the Giant, they got really drunk and almost caused Andre to miss his flight. He left them at the gate where they were passed out and boarded his flight without them. They came to and had to catch up with him at a later connecting flight, where they angrily confronted him, swearing and shouting threats. He cuts them off and simply says, “You’re all fired. Don’t show up at the card.” They all start laughing and telling him to fuck himself, and that he doesn’t run the company and doesn’t decide shit. Andre replies to them, “Wait until tonight”. Andre gets to his hotel room and makes one phone call to Vince McMahon, and immediately the Freebirds get a call from the WWF informing them that they are fired. That’s why you never saw them on TV in the WWF, such was the power Andre wielded in that company.

@MisterRogersSnapped @admin Wasn't Wepner the inspiration for Rocky Balboa?
-
@admin Wepner took Ali the distance, he was no joke! That's wild!

@MisterRogersSnapped If you want to know just how lethal Andre could have been in a real fight, watch his exhibition match against Chuck Wepner. It is absolutely astonishing how fast Andre was, not just with his hands, but on his feet, nimbly keeping pace around the ring against a ranked heavyweight boxer. Back around 1973-1977, Andre was in his physical prime and I don’t think any man on earth could’ve taken him.

@admin Andre was wonderful. At the risk of outing myself as completely uncool (lmao) I thought he was awesome in The Princess Bride. If you go look up his pre WWE matches he was a super athlete, too.

@ArdainianRight @admin I really dont know. I know some boxing, especially like Sonny Liston, Rocky Marciano, Jack Dempsey, Iron Mike. I love listening to the Teddy Atlas podcast, stuff like that. But I dont know a lot like some guys.
-
@MisterRogersSnapped @admin I think specifically the Wepner-Ali fight was the inspiration for the first Rocky.

@ArdainianRight @MisterRogersSnapped Wepner fought Ali in 1975, in Ali’s first fight after winning the title back from George Foreman. Wepner surprised everyone when he dropped Ali in the 9th round, and lasted until the end of the 15th round when the referee awarded Ali a TKO victory after landing a bunch of unanswered punches. Sylvester Stallone said that Wepner was the inspiration for Rocky Balboa.
