I have struggled to explain to folks such as @coolboymew why I now favor Arch Linux over Debian based systems after 20 years. For me it mostly comes down to software availability. I recorded a demo of myself installing MPV directly from Github. What's happening here:
1. the yay command searches all possible options (pre built packages, user repositories, etc) and outputs a list. Notice option 2 would have installed a pre built version of MPV with every possible library included.
2. I select the mpv-git AUR user script. This downloads the latest code from git, and checks that I have all the libraries and build tools I need installed.
3. I sit back and relax as the system builds MPV from source, and then creates a local package which it then installs.
Main takeway: Installing stuff from source is literally as easy as installing any other package, so I get to have my cake and eat it too.

Nice, a lot of people don't know how to and they use the AUR as a crutch. I just advocate knowing how to, it doesn't mean I don't understand the convenience of the AUR and time constraints. I use the AUR on my music production install. Some people assume that I am anti-AUR when I post like this lol. makepkg, not war!

You're assuming I can't compile stuff without git, but you're wrong :D

At some point you have to take off the training wheels and learn how to compile software without the AUR. Porting your own software can be a very fun experience, then it doesn't matter what Linux distro or CPU architecture you're on.

my friend tried to install arch because his autist boyfriend tried to get him to.
he nearly smashed his monitor and almost reinstalled windows
