@chjara when i was a kid i had to be convinced that how we dealt with trash was "move it out of sight and then pile it up high" I figured for sure we had a better plan than that.

like, impressive how Big Plastic just convinced literally everyone that plastic recycling is a real thing when it's, not
first, plastic is a very very wide term. and, usually, plastics are stable. really, really, Really stable. that's why they're both so useful and such an environmental concern (and why "biodegradable" plastics are all the rage these days)
so, they're hard to recycle. you can't really melt them and reuse it like glass or metal too, since they're more like, sort of cloth, since they're polymers, so that's a mess too, plus heating it too much tends to chemically degrade the plastic which is an issue as well
and in the end, most plastic put in recycling bins goes through a variety of recycling companies and eventually ends up in landfills in china
