   Back in 2016, Google boosted "news" from AMP sites in a news carousel. Breitbart, FOX, and NYPost were AMP'ed. The BBC, WaPo, and NYTimes were not. Google search results boosted fascist sources.

   AMP is gone, with the news carousel now showing what's popular on Twitter. Elon's Twitter algorithms promote fasists and ban anti-fascists reporters. Once again, Google News is boosting fascism.

   Once again, no one is doing anything about this, not even acknowledging it

     @estelle well @aral did. A lot. Not many people wanted to hear it and another group did not accept it.

     @estelle I guess Marco’s point was that I’ve been warning about the toxic effects of Google (& FB, etc.) since 2014 or so and the response (especially in those years) was folks in the web community circling the wagons—either because they worked there or had friends who worked there—and ostrasising those who called them out. Lots of folks were/are on the wrong side of history and did/do great harm in legitimising and shielding these people farmers.

     @aral 1000% agree. Same experience. I railed on AMP for years and it always fell on unwilling ears. Similarly, the initial toot only got one interaction initially, until I boosted it again and again. People don't want to hear that the companies they rely on (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, etc) are at this point doing more harm than good. @nice2meatu

     @estelle This is not accurate. The New York Times did participate in AMP, right from the start. In line with many publishers it stopped when AMP became non-compulsory for news carousel in 2021. Same for the BBC.
