A friend who left Hong Kong after the democracy movement was crushed moved to Singapore. A friend who felt stifled as a gay man in Singapore moved to the States. A friend who left the States over gun violence moved home to India. A friend who left India over BJP hindutva moved to Turkey. Friends who left Turkey over Erdogan moved here to the UK. And here every day is National Shite Day. This is the world we live in.
@adamgreenfield As an ex-Turkish citizen who cannot visit Turkey because he “insulted” Erdoğan¹, who moved from the UK when the spectre of Brexit (and the investigatory powers bill – now act) raised its head², who lived a couple of years in Sweden, and who now lives in Ireland with his British partner, you have no idea how much this hits home.
I’m not entirely sure there’s anywhere to go. We have to make here better, wherever we are.
@aral@adamgreenfield As a trans person who can't even visit their Florida hometown anymore under threat of state-sanctioned violence, I hear you. It hurts every day.
I wish the UK felt more welcoming to me than it does, too.
