It's been holding water with minimal drainage for several months. Now that it's been through a fall and winter some organic material has accumulated and it's starting to form algae. I have a pump to keep the water moving but there aren't any plants in there yet, and the pump outlet to connect it to the filter broke so until I can repair it it's more like a fountain than a filter pump. I am getting the replacement part tomorrow, but I have to start thinking about plants that I can put in there. The problem is the ducks tend to eat anything i put in there before it gets a chance to get established. I can pick up a bunch of water lettuce or duckweed but it'll be gone in a day or 2. -

I am going to probably line it and put dirt down over it so the ducks don't scratch through the liner. I used bricks in my initial brainstorming, but I think for the final product I'll probably use stone. The brick did look pretty nice, but I think I can make the stone match the surroundings a lot easier. -

I just broke the ice so the ducks could get to it when it froze over. The floor is starting to settle down (more compacted, less loose material), and I'm in the process of laying pea gravel which will help tamp it down even more. The ducks root the edges which adds new mud to the water, but once I get the gravel down they'll not be able to do that quite as much. I am also pulling up what loose material I can from the bottom to build up the edges a little to keep other yard waste from finding it's way in so easily. I want to make sure I leave room for water to find it's way to the pond when the surrounding area is saturated, but I want to try and avoid hay and leaves being washed in with it. -

Maybe right at the outlet of the waterfall and at the base near where the pump will ultimately be I could build a few cages too around some marsh grasses without taking up too much space on the shore. I might need to sketch this out. -

Basically build an external sump pit shallow well for surrounding water to collect into before being pumped into the pond. -

I've been running it for 2 days and it has gotten stopped up a few times, but last year the basket I have it in was getting pulled down into the floor and there was always tons of mud getting into the pump. The couple times I've had to mess with it the pump was actually clean, but the bag around it was blocked up.
Right now it's in a turkey fryer basket with about 2 inches of gravel underneath of it to keep it from sucking up the floor. I should be able to get it hooked up to the filter this weekend. Ideally I would have it at the lowest spot in the pond, but I have to keep the power connection outside of the fence or the dog will chew on it so I don't really have the reach to get it where I want it. I am also kind of hesitant to do much more digging since it seems to be sealed up and I'd hate to create a new leak that will take a year to seal up again. I was planning on doing some framing up around where the water fall will be to make some grow beds so the idea of building one in the water might work out nicely. I think I might be at a point where I have to actually take some measurements and form a more solid plan around the waterfall. -

Not much you can do about the pup, unless burying the cable and wiring in a switch is an option... Maybe a hide a key rock over the switch? I'm finally going to put a semi-raised bed in the wet full-sun area of my yard. Hopefully I get a lot of melons and tomatoes this year! Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -
