Look, seriously, do not visit the US. They’re going full fascist.
The EU should be releasing travel warnings at this point.

I am really disappointed that #opensource organisations like @pycon and @NumFOCUS have remained silent on this.
They position themselves as being diverse, inclusive, and supporting good things for everyone all over the globe - and they do generally live up to that aim.
But on this their silence is loud.
And that silence is not neutrality.
And imho, it is privilege that allows them to remain silent, to look the other way.
@WeirdWriter Hollywood and TV shows, probably, who knows.
Seriously! Why do people assume it's safe for them to travel here? I don't get it. @aral
@aral I am in the USA and I agree. I'm not inviting anyone from outside the country for the foreseeable future unfortunately.
(I have a rough idea what to do if a visitor has trouble with local law enforcement here, but you could be sent to a Federal or private location out of state where it would be hard for any host or their lawyer to communicate with you)
@bluetea Same. You couldn’t pay me enough to go.
@aral I wouldn't go to America if you gave me free tickets.
@aral Germany has to their queer community, but it’s time for that to expand to everyone and for more EU members to issue it

@masukomi @dmarti I’m so sorry you have to go through this :(
@dmarti @aral I’m in the US and I’m afraid to leave because there is a fair chance, they will arrest me because of the gender on my passport when I try to come back.
@masukomi @aral yes, that's a huge issue (and one that on its own should rule out having events here—conference organizers need to pay attention and not just assume that no attendee is affected)
@aral @dmarti at least i’m not in texas *shudder*
Being trans in the US right now is bringing up a lot of homosexual / jew in 1937-1938 Germany vibes. I’m more scared with every passing month
@meduz @schrotthaufen @WeirdWriter @aral
Victim blaming. Not cool.
@WeirdWriter @aral Privileged enough to think they’re exempt, I suppose.
@schrotthaufen @WeirdWriter @aral Exactly this. They are white.
As a non-white, it’s completely clear there are countries I wouldn’t travel to, and the U.S.A. has been one of them since 2 decades.
@levampyre @meduz @schrotthaufen @WeirdWriter Won’t someone think of the puy whites.
@levampyre @meduz @schrotthaufen @WeirdWriter Sorry, I thought you meant victim blaming as in blaming the people in the US by telling folks not to visit there. I agree, it wasn’t her fault in the slightest. But, also, there’s merit in the note on privilege. I’ve heard too many white folks tell me how much they love going on holiday in Turkey or Dubai, etc., ambivalent about the human rights abuses.
@aral @meduz @schrotthaufen @WeirdWriter
Whatever "puy" means. But if it's just her own fault for being so stupid to travel there, why even bother!? This shouldn't be a matter of colour. Black folks know about such things happening and prepare. White folks don't. That's what we call privilege. Nevertheless, things like these shouldn't happen - not to her, nor to anyone. But they are, it's crazy and she's a victim of this madness. It's tragic and not her fault. So don't blame her for stupidity!
