@arstechnica Ah this brought back memories of reel-to-reel magnetic tape and archiving. Way back in the 90's we knew that archiving meant a lifetime of restoring, copying, and protecting.
Back when we were trying to find an alternative to GCR tape and cartridge storage, it became pretty clear that CD (WORM) had a longer but not indefinite life, and that even CDs would need to be routinely copied with error correction to newer media.
DVD has less tolerance for media rot than CD, so doubly so
@arstechnica - this makes it clear that NOW is the time for people to "rip" their DVD's to digital backups, if they haven't already, and luckily the DRM on DVD (unlike most Blu-Ray) can be easily bypassed these days.
