Finally finished "Beyond Citadel". Jesus what a weird game.
Definitely much more bizarre and melancholy than its predecessor, it also adds a lot mechanically to augment what made the first one good. I think Doekuramori deserves the praise they've been getting, the core essence of Boomer Shooters is encapsulated well, with more than enough of a unique spin to avoid being too same-y with its inspirations.
That said, the final stretch of the game is absolute torture. There's no shortage of supplies, ammo, health shit throughout 70-80% of the game, but at the end they suddenly go bone dry and you have to crawl through level after level, including boss fights, scraping by with the last of your ammunition. For the second-to-last boss fight, I ended up chipping away his health with 8 throwing knives that I kept throwing, dashing it to pick up, retreating, and throwing again for something like 30 fucking minutes. For the very last boss fight I was running in circles to let my health slowly regenerate, then stopping to line up shots with the last handful of bullets in my starter pistol and a combat rifle that was so degraded that nearly 1 out of every 3 shots jammed the weapon.
Still, once you actually beat it, it feels great. But holy fuck the game loves to hand your hand almost all the way there, then suddenly stop and kick you in the balls for good measure.
