If your country doesn't produce hard goods, it'll eventually be at the complete mercy of those that do. That's why the "service economy" is a meme, nearly all services require goods to facilitate their existence. A primarily service-based economy only functions in highly specific circumstances like Singapore, where physical constraints limit their manufacturing output, but trillions of dollars worth of goods pass through their ports thanks to strategic geography. - † top dog :pedomustdie: likes this.

In 2007 they started building a casino on the grounds of the former Bethlehem Steel plant, closed in 2003 due to Boomers looting the company rather than investing the profits. Completion was delayed until 2009 due to a steel shortage.
This is the perfect metaphor for the current anglosphere.
