this thunderbolt dock is great. every time I plug it in, it tells me I need to go download Dell Command | Update (WHO PUTS A PIPE IN THEIR PROGRAM NAME? SERIOUSLY?) so that my dock will work. I have Dell Command | Update, and it tells me my everything is up to date.
and my dock continues to not work

it's stuck in that fun middleground where it can tell that I attached a thunderbolt dock I need to update, but none of the updaters can see it.

@foone Dell laptop or something else? Dell really screwed up some of their docks, because you can only update the firmware on specific Dell laptops – if you have a different brand laptop, or even an unsupported Dell laptop, there's no way to install firmware updates.
