I know people can be dumb, but designing a digital dictaphone that can record ***only*** in WMA deserves a special award.

Not according to the manuals.Those are Olympus (before the name change) VN series 540, 731, 8500 (all ending with “PC)”.
Probably more due to producing different similar models with slightly different numbers, but those can also differ (f.e. 8500 is WMA only, but the 8600 and 8700 have MP3, but still no PCM). -

@dzwiedziu ugh but it makes sense from the one point of view,, dictaphones aren't devices e.g. podcast recording

I wouldn't count podcasts out. Dictaphones are also interview devices. -
