Yup.Until the nerds figure out how to easily engage the public with their hobby money, it's just hobby money like baseball cards.

Honestly fiat currency is nothing more than hobby money with network effect and the threat of violence if you try and exit the hobby. -

There is always room to improve in that area, but I think even if it is super simply there is still a lot of fear, uncertainty, and doubt being injected into the conversation by people with fiat interests, and fighting through all of that may be harder than making a set of tools easier to use. -
Sir Pantangelini (pantangelini@noagendasocial.com)'s status on Saturday, 08-Apr-2023 00:10:12 JST Sir Pantangelini I think it has great potential.
But the nerd money people need to understand the barrier of entry issues.
If they can address that(without several apps) it'll work.

No need to prove you live where you say you do (no need to even divulge your address). No need to wait at the DMV for an ID. No requirement for a lease or bills in your name or a letter from a guardian. You just pick a number and call it yours (there are plenty to go around).
I'm being cheeky, but it's true. People have no problem figuring out how to use a facebook, twitter, whatsapp, instagram, snapchat, ebay, paypal, etc app but a wallet app is a bridge too far.
Sadly most people depend on cell phones for most of their computer needs, but there are some great options for people with a fully capable computer. Bisq has a builtin bitcoin wallet and you can use it to buy crypto using fiat currencies either in person or using wires. You can trade bitcoin for other cryptocurrencies, and you can send your balance to any other wallet address on the same network.
I think a person might opt to have multiple wallets for a variety of reasons, but to start participating in the crypto market you only need 1 wallet, and it doesn't even have to be associated with an app unless you want to spend. -

for what it's worth though to actually make the wallet useful you are probably going to have to connect to an exchange at some point and all of those are subject to KYC regs.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 08-Apr-2023 00:36:09 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: @dew_the_dew @Pantangelini not saying I haven't used them... they are convenient (accessible from a phone for people without laptops/desktops), but you don't need them to move funds between state fiat and crypto. There are plenty of p2p options. I think bisq might be the best one right now (unless localmonero has you covered).
I agree if a person follows the typical on ramp to crypto they will likely create an exchange controlled wallet, but it's not a necessity and I would advocate for helping people avoid it if possible. Exchanges are untrustworthy. Each one that screws people over creates more FUD people have to sift through. Ignoring the centralized exchanges and trading peer to peer is also more inline with the spirit of cryptocurrency which is meant to be decentralized. -

It is a different process which may make it seem more complicated
