     @nyanide Matrix works great as a private platform for a few friends. I have a non-federated server that works well for that purpose. Just don't use SQLite for the DB.
     Not to say it doesn't work well in a larger group, I just don't have experience with that.

     @nyanide XMPP actually works great, including MUCs (unless you're introducing encryption like OMEMO into MUCs, then things start falling apart very quickly).
