people who are so obsessed with celebrating the "white race" are funny because bestie there's no such thing as the white race
europe is very internally diverse, even though they all have roughly the same skin color, doesn't mean there's a bunch of cultures and even lineages and ethnicities
you can celebrate your heritage and culture, but not celebrate white heritage and culture, because there's no such thing as white heritage and culture outside of the system of white supremacy

@chjara is there a "black race?" All the "blacks" in America came from different nations and ethnic groups around west Africa and even worse, most of them are mixed with Europeans.
-
@PonyPanda @chjara yeah there's a black race. I'm running away from them the fastest
-
@chjara feels like social divisions/groupings are all pretty arbitrary and being proud of group membership or assigning achievements to them is often wrong when investigated closer.
-
@Moon cringe polity to celebrate but go ahead
-
@chjara what about celebrating the holy roman empire
-
@glitch @chjara yeah, true!
I think the anti-Catholic hate is under-recognized in American immigration politics. We used to really hate Catholics. Had a whole political party about it. There was massive opposition to JFK's presidency because he was Catholic.
-
@Moon @chjara Ah. I assumed they were government funded. Privately funded does make more sense for the US tbh.
The intent was still the same - try to create a national unity between Italians and Americans. Considering that in the US, Italian-Americans aren't seen as a minority anymore, I think they succeeded.
-
@glitch @chjara a ton of the statues were paid for and put up by italian-american groups. Also people hated italians was because for a while we kept letting in ones that blew people up with bombs and because they were catholic

@chjara It gets really funny whenever those idiots start trying to draw lines about what is and what isn't white.
White means absolutely jack shit besides "this is the majority accepted group we want to protect" to these people. Back at the turn of the 20th century, Italians weren't considered white by white supremacists. (This is specifically why the US has so many cheap Columbus statues - the government wanted to try and improve Italian integration, so by portraying Columbus in a heroic light, the hope was that Americans would see that a famed American hero* was Italian, so Italians were just as much American).
It's why their endgame always devolves into infighting and devouring each other. They don't have a clear definition and they can't agree on one. This is also why some white supremacists groups are rather suprisingly diverse (you'd be surprised how frequently you find South Americans in these groups who I can assure you that white supremacists of the past wouldn't put up with - hell look at Enrique Tarrio).
*: At the time anyway.
