   I mean, on some level the Sharia hardliner types in the Muslim world know damn well just how depraved their people are, and the necessity of absolute brutality to keep them in check. Based on everything I've seen of Arabs, you do actually need that kind of strict moral code to be able to carve out some level of existence even slightly above the beasts.

     @ArdainianRight Maybe. But if we compare how much of the middle east was in ancient and pre-islamic times a super strict moral code wasn't necessary to keep order. A lot of those places weren't Arab before the Islam so that may play into the dynamic a lot as well.
     Sharia seems to me to be a chicken or the egg sort of question: Does Islamic morality create the deprivation the necessitates Sharia? Or does Sharia by its existence bring an undercurrent of depravity by its Draconian nature?

     @Robert_Edwardly @ArdainianRight I'm not claiming these ancient societies were beacons of morality but there doesn't seem to be historical evidence of anything like sharia present to stop men from raping random women on the streets of Pharonic Egypt, because that likely wasn't a problem for them.

     @ArdainianRight @Robert_Edwardly No. But the Babylonians were a Semitic people as well and didn't have these sorts of issues either. Being Arab is part of the equation but not the entirety of it.
