     @nyanide aye, tried both literally writing it with cat (this used to be faster) and using dd, both of these are tried and true methods that have served me just fine in the past. im extremely confused

     @coolbean perhaps the disk issues have something to do with this, I'm assuming you have more than 1 computer right? If so, you may need to fall back to a different machine to flash the installer, assuming you haven't already done so

     @nyanide i was flashing them on my desktop which is running debian, only checked the kernel panic-ing thinkpad after sanity checking that it cant boot from the flash drive either
     
     dd is awfully and unusually fast with the flash drive (3.5s 200MB/s write speed)
     
     the kernel panic-ing thinkpad is an unrelated and far more terrifying issue than installing openbsd on an old machine i wanted to use as an nfs server
