One nice consequence of using Wayland is that I've now severed my last regular and significant usage of continually Oracle developed software, since I couldn't use VirtualBox even if I want to
-
@pernia You joke, but bochs is actually lit. I mostly use virt-manager with libvirt kvm now tho. (as an aside, I've unironically considered "bochs win2k running vpc2007" as an emulation strategy for 9x)
-
@netdoll @pernia Bochs' development seems to be stalled, 86Box/PCBox support more hardware and might be more accurate as well. Regardless, if something doesn't run on gayland, it's gayland's fault.
-
@netdoll now you have to emulate win7 in bochs and run virtualbox inside windows 7
-
@mint @pernia 86box falls off pretty hard after Pentium MMX or so, Bochs handles newer hardware to a substantial extent. Also lol, I'm gonna pretty solidly put the blame on Oracle here because VirtualBox is a pile of hacks upon hacks anyway and requires a third party kernel module to function, where QEMU or nearly anything else doesn't.
-
@netdoll @pernia Yeah, out-of-tree modules are burdensome. But at least it doesn't require KVM to be unloaded, unlike VMWare.
-
@mint @pernia The only definitively Wayland related issue I'm having right now is that keyboard capture is broken on GNOME 43, allegedly a fix has been pushed through GNOME 44 and Fedora backports but I haven't seen it yet.
-
@netdoll @pernia That reminds me I wanted to get some old PCI graphics card and try passing it to the VM with an equally old system installed. I've already done it with XP and some early 10s ATI slot plug, so I wonder if one can go older.
-
@mint @pernia Oldest one I have laying around is a Radeon 9800, not counting whatever Mac spec card is in my Quicksilver 2002 G4. Actually, I'd be curious whether PCI passthrough would work with a card like that and whether qemu-system-ppc mac99 Open Firmware would cooperate, if it did, I have some options open to me...
-
@netdoll @pernia To my knowledge, it only works with proper hardware-level virtualization with IOMMU support. So no luck there unless you manage to get your hands on Talos II or something.
-
@mint @pernia Tbh I sometimes not regret blowing my ridin' with Biden funbux on a Talos II, but then I remember I still have a crippling game addiction and feel better about the whole thing.
