Though called the "Java Desktop System," it's not actually written in Java. It uses GNOME and other free software, mostly coded in C and C++. With the end of the OpenSolaris project, Java Desktop System (JDS) Release 3 is now the last release of the project. It is a dead end. They now just a stock version of GNOME in Solaris 11.
