Because there is no concept of Ethnicity in America, and because people are organized in rough groups based on Colors (white, black, etc.), there are no real Foreigners in America. A Brown person remains Brown, with a certain behavior expected. A Black remains Black, with a certain behavior expected. And a White person is simply White, again, with a certain behavior expected from within and without the group.
These categories, reminiscent of colors assigned to teams, assure that every newcomer can quickly assimilate into an established pattern of behavior—joining a team—with some individuals transcending their racial ties, daring to "switch teams" to a different color (a "White person" subscribing to Black patterns, a Brown person "acting White").
Exceptions to this New World (no roots, no ethnicity) behavior can be found with Irish, Italian, and other demographics that retained to various degrees their ethnic identity. The word Ethnic, coincidentally, has assumed negative connotations in the anglosphere (backward/foreign), perhaps exactly because it runs contrary to the "choose your own identity" system normalized in America.- † top dog :pedomustdie: likes this.
