Now we know that, like other transformative technologies before it, the Internet simply transferred enormous quantities of wealth and power into the hands of a tiny group of psychopaths.

     @nixCraft I can't seem to put a pin on it, but I definitely miss it. It's probably got something to do with all the relentless advertising and lack of fresh content.

     I think people used to be more opinionated and expressive, rather than show herd behaviour.

     For some reason NFS Underground 2 comes to mind and so does the title track.

     @nixCraft Terrible design. Horrendous personal home pages and blogs. It didn’t have to be perfect, it didn’t have to look slick, people just tried things. Nobody knew what an influencer was. People just shared their designs and thoughts with little care and then stumbled into their communities.

     @nixCraft People put stuff online because they wanted to share / collaborate / code a website about something they really enjoyed. Nobody did it for profit. Nothing was monetized. No ads, no bloat, no paywalls, no JavaScript, no corporate owned social media, in fact there was very little media of any kind at all.

     It was also a world where pretty much everything was in plain text but nobody really cared to exploit it.
