   @MetalSamurai covers this in a blog post with a remarkably in-depth discussion of the challenges and consequences of trying to make it work.

   It's a surprisingly hard problem with no easy solutions. Not because the problem is fundamentally hard. Because it's not. But because Mastodon, and ActivityPub, weren't really designed with portable identities in mind, and now we're painted into a corner where now this is pretty hard to achieve.

     @cuchaz The problem can be solved by introducing a separate identity that doesn't depend on DNS, and linking it to ActivityPub actor. I described this in FEP-c390 proposal: https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/branch/main/feps/fep-c390.md

     Suppose you have two Fediverse accounts. For each one you generate an identity proof using your Burger browser extension. Everyone can verify that identity proofs are signed by the same key, so they treat these two accounts as aliases.

     Then you can start moving your followers and data between aliases.
