   So let me get this straight: First, it was Elon. Now, it is Mark. Two guys are removing all moderation rules on social media. And are people asking another billionaire to build alternative social media? Do you even hear yourself? That is not going to fix anything. Maybe we should go back to the days of blogs, mailing lists, individual forums, and RSS feeds and end this madness of centralized social media apart from the federation. I’m just saying

     @nixCraft not just fact checking and moderation, but also throwing diversity rules to the side.

     What we need to do is generate a culture where those sites and apps are seen as a culture of stupidity, unreliable for even basic information, we could even flood it with shitposts that make them unusable. (Though the latter seems pointless)

     @nixCraft 💯 One major problem for blogs and other sites now is discoverability. I run a fairly large open source news site, and Google's most recent algorithm update decimated my traffic. The search monopoly is definitely part of the problem too.

     @nixCraft neocities is a thing. Most of us won't go back to the way it was, but I think there might be a way forward. There has to be some sort of a community driven alternative to this corporate trash.

     @nixCraft Billionaires like Zuckerberg and Musk want to control the social communication lines of society. This is grotesque Capitalism at its best. They want to tear down society and rebuilt it to serve their business interest. Look at the people Trump is appointing to important government cabinets positions, billionaires. You also see this in American style Catholicism and evangelicals. American Christianity has been rebuilt with a right wing flare to it. The oligarchs are making their move.

     @nixCraft install Apache and the LAMP stack on a system. Connect it to the web. Use DDNS to keep the address public.
     Become a server and host sites for the resistance.
     Hint: they aren't very smart and can't think outside the box. Don't use IO port 80.

     @nixCraft this is why I chose to relocate to Mastodon. However note that almost 50 percent of the US businesses reject this kind of free-for-all of disinformation and mistreatment and not every entrepreneur is a Musk or Zuckerberg

     @nixCraft What was fundamentally different before modern social media was that hosts and providers were only that, and did not profit from user content, so they had little motive other than policing to interfere with it.

     Imagine if your phone company could profit from what you say on the phone, and how often, and who hears it. That's the reality we're in right now online. The profit motives of commercial hosts in a minimally regulated mediascape inescapably lead to such manipulation.

     @nixCraft couldn’t agree more, I still run my own blog and I will do it as long as possible, any sm is just a wrapper around content there.
     But as someone already mentioned, the problem is in discoverability - it’s really hard to break through google. Also, more recent problem, AI scrapping. And law is far behind it, or decides to be far behind because it is profitable.
     Somewhere I hope we are entering the post-social-media era, and ppl will turn more to real world.
