Woodrow Wilson was one of the more disastrous and idiotic figures to occupy the Oval Office.
Every now and again, however, he exhibited a fleeting moment of Chad-hilarity.
Favorite example has to be the Tampico Affair.
In 1914, nine American sailors went ashore to purchase supplies for their vessel. Mexican police arrested them.
“Admiral Henry Mayo demanded that the US sailors be released, and that Mexico issue an apology, raise and salute the US flag, and perform a 21-gun salute.”
The sailors were soon returned, but President Huerta 🇲🇽 refused to order the salute of the American flag and the firing of a 21-gun salute, understandably seeing such demands as excessive and ridiculous.
Wilson thus ordered the navy to blow up the city of Veracruz. The ensuing bombardment leveled portions of the city and killed nearly 200 people. It was then invaded and occupied for months until President Huerta was ousted from his office.
The international lügenpresse 👃 was scandalized but Wilson couldn’t understand what the fuss was about.
They refused to salute *our* flag.
Not blowing up a city or two would’ve been an eternal stain on the honor of the American people.
