Mark (mark@nicecrew.digital)'s status on Monday, 06-Jan-2025 18:45:02 JST Mark @japananon Hey I was thinking about that prepaid/gift card discussion, do you know the legality of buying cards in a random conbini and reselling them to a third party?
I wouldn't mind doing it especially for Monero, but I don't know if buying Amazon/Rakuten/DMM cards requires any kind of KYC in some situation, and I don't know if it could trigger some flag if I go over a certain amount, etc.-
チャノさん (japananon@mitra.anon-kenkai.com)'s status on Monday, 06-Jan-2025 18:45:01 JST チャノさん @Mark I can't see how it would be illegal. At worst, it might be considered a ToS violation for the service tethered to it (but how would that even be enforced, really?).
I've seen plenty of warnings on the prepaid card section of the conbini, "don't buy prepaid cards for people on the internet, this leads to fraud". But I think that's just the Police State trying to keep people in their cages. They know that if people start doing money/prepaid swaps online it'll make their lives harder, so they try to scare people off of it in spite of it still being a legal activity (afaik).
I certainly wouldn't engage in the trade with my real name or details, though, just to stay on the safe side. Best to stay plausibly deniable whenever possible.

チャノさん (japananon@mitra.anon-kenkai.com)'s status on Monday, 06-Jan-2025 19:13:37 JST チャノさん @Mark It's worth remembering that if you buy prepaid cards with cash at a convenience store (especially one not near your home address) it's very hard to trace back to the buyer reliably, if at all.

Mark (mark@nicecrew.digital)'s status on Monday, 06-Jan-2025 19:13:38 JST Mark Alright, I might go take a look at what's available at my nearest conbini and list them for sale on Monero marketplaces. The only worry I have is if the cards are used for anything illegal it might be linked back to me, or if I get big orders I might trigger some anti-money laundering or anti-fraud flags, but I doubt I'd even get more than a few orders in the first place anyway. -
チャノさん (japananon@mitra.anon-kenkai.com)'s status on Monday, 06-Jan-2025 19:31:14 JST チャノさん @Mark surveillance cam footage is about the only point of capture I can think of, and yeah, it'd require a great deal of effort to even go that far, to say nothing of taking the investigation anywhere beyond it (and the police here are lazy shits if there isn't a fire under their asses). So I think you'd be fine. Bonus paranoia points if you get somebody else to buy them for you and hand them over later, but that might be taking things too far.

Mark (mark@nicecrew.digital)'s status on Monday, 06-Jan-2025 19:31:15 JST Mark Well I assume since the cards are activated at the register when you pay, the cops could always just ask the video surveillance of the conbini at this specific time and have you at five different angles. Not enough to identify you but I believe they could work with it if they really wanted to for some reason.
But there's no real reason for them to go that far I think.
