     @nixCraft yeah I started with Gentoo. fun initially, but I wasted a lot of CPU cycles 😃. i used Debian for some 10 years after that.

     main downside of Debian is that stable often won't support new hardware, and testing is not stable enough to run. so when I bought a new machine 5y ago I distro shopped and switched to arch.

     arch seems to have both bleeding edge and stable down. plus I love the rolling release system.

     @nixCraft There is only 1 distro. They only differ in the package manager, what they will set up for you out of the box, and how many text editors they will install.

     As somebody who needed to get stuff done (*), I relate and appreciate. Got an old EeePC 701 from a box in the basement, powered it up, and it resumed from a nine year hibernation, giving me a fully working(**) Debian jessie/sid environment!

     (*) monitor a failing heating system
     (**) only needed to change the sources.list to archive.debian.org
