@Vidmastereon @Kyonko802 How the fuck did western animation regress from this to the absolute garbage animation we have today. No wonder these generations are fucked up. Kyonko802 likes this. -

@Vidmastereon @Kyonko802 At some point it all became this godawfull same looking callarts style that is barely even animated.
I guess that was around the same time they stopped making cartoons about bad ass hero's saving the day and getting bitches. Gotta demoralize those kids with cynical faggot slop made by lonely catladies like steven universe. :sussyjew:Kyonko802 and :awoo_tired: shotgun snuggler :clownpiece_smug: like this. -

@Tamamo @Vidmastereon The 90s was peak anti-hero age. You could save the day and not be a cheeseball while doing it. It made heroes badass. Anime never stopped doing this, and it's why western slop is getting clowned on by it now. :awoo_tired: shotgun snuggler :clownpiece_smug: likes this. -

@VTArgyle @Tamamo @Vidmastereon I think the last western cartoon I genuinly enjoyed was MLP. They somehow managed to shit that out while the corruption was happening. After that it's been nothing but calarts and subversive remakes. -

@Tamamo @Vidmastereon @Kyonko802 That makes me think now, what was the most recently made cartoon I watched that I actually liked? :zt_think2: -

@Tamamo my favorite one. It's not fully anime (US/JP co-production) and ran together with all the other manly cartoons back then so I think it counts. Kyonko802 and :awoo_tired: shotgun snuggler :clownpiece_smug: like this. -

@Kyonko802 @Vidmastereon Peak anti-hero evolved in the comics of the early 00's like Spawn, Darkness, Witchblade, etc

A lot of it was due to who was making it. It was made by adults as something that both a kid could enjoy at the kid's level but also something that an adult could enjoy.
One of the things that made Gargoyles great is that they had great worldbuilding with lore that built upon mythology and Shakespeare, with storylines that build upon each other and had an impact on the overall show.
It also helped that they had antagonists who were actually smart. Heck, the "Xanatos Gambit" became a well known tropes because of this.
They were also serious about the art. In "Batman, the Animated Series" they developed a way to make the world of Gothem "dark" without going full emo by using black paper for the backgrounds (even if they were drawing a sunny day) instead of the classical white.
Heck, I'd say that the series that followed "Batman, the Animated Series" including Superman, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, and Batman Beyond is the best comic book cape stories ever adapted.
Back then they were creative and came up with new characters and new ideas that worked, and choose to interpret older characters rather than abuse the IP. They created Harley Quinn as a character that was good (hyper-obsessive fangirl who was clearly a villain you didn't sympathize with, even though you could empathize with her before her descent to madness) before DC turned her into some bratty sadist. They created a new backstory to Mr. Freeze that completely changed him from a gimmick to a well-rounded villain who, again, you didn't sympathize with who they are but with the person they used to be when they fell. Heck, they created a new Batman for Batman Beyond who could act like the overly young man he was while still making him serious and cognizant of what he was doing. But it was the willingness to have moments like this that made it great: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUy5rsO5cwoKyonko802 likes this. -
