     this is actually something that blew my mind fwiw
     like, in the americas we tend to presume like
     "ok yeah sure suburbs aren't dense but downtown is!"
     now that I've been to a couple of places in europe
     LOL NO
     the most downtown of downtowns around here is like
     just a "normal" european region
     while european downtowns are just insane
     like, times square feels roomy

     @tost yeah i have no idea how the fuck americans even live, i have never seen something that even approaches the lack of density of the average US suburb and i've lived in fairly rural areas

     I feel more piled up on people in Montreal than I do in Strasbourg, despite the latter having like 4x the density
     
     on the other hand it means you can just walk to a store
     and the store isn't going out of business because just the people that can get there by walking are more than enough to sustain it

     @tost @chjara I like having enough room to have animals and grow my own food. The stores I go to most frequently are local businesses that are fully sustained by local commerce although most of the customers do drive. There is still a 7/11 2 minutes walking distance from my home if I absolutely need to hit a store quickly, but kids can play in the street without worrying too much about getting hit, and every house has a yard. Also you can recognize most of the people you see on a day to day basis.
