Making a phone call to Iran putting you on a blacklist has been a thing since 1990. -

So for instance if a new router comes out from China, "their priority" is to make sure that router isnt sending copies of your data to the Chinese state.
That said I'm sure they're already prioritizing sending copies of your data to the NSA.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

> congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/686/text?s=1&r=15
Finally. Fuck's sake.
The bill basically says if you're under the jurisdiction of a hostile government (designated by the State Department) and running a service that might cause a compromise of national security, the State Department can ask the president to authorize an audit of their gear and their data or file suit to compel divestment. So, it's nothing, they're just going after Tiktok, and any future stuff that might crop up. I stopped the video when the fatty said "THIS SAYS WIRELESS NETWORK THIS MEANS HOME WIFI", but that appears in the "all of that company's shit, tangible or intangible, including without limitation, etc." Unless China/Iran/Russia/North Korea operates your wifi, and this gets out of committee, and then passes the Senate, and then the House, it's nothing. Maybe the committee or the House or whoever tacks on some evil shit, but it's nothing bad on its own.
Granted, "national security" has been broadly defined these last twenty years and that's gotten much broader these last two years. Tiktok is especially brutal about slurping up every piece of data it can and generals and members of Congress are too goddamn stupid not to put it on their phones, so there's gonna be kompromat. So, you've got members of Congress on Android phones broadcasting on Tiktok during the January 6th deal and because of the way the PRC works, they can tell what happened and when, which probably qualifies it under the overly broad definition of "national security". They probably know which generals are cheating on their wives with Puertorican rentboys, it's national security if they can blackmail a general. Shit like that. -

I generally oppose any increase in surveillance authority granted to government. I haven't read through all of this bill yet, but what I read in the beginning does seem mostly to use language that would seem to constrain its coverage to foreign adversaries. Considering how often I hear people accused of shilling for Putin or whatever I wouldn't be surprised to see this used against a shitposter somewhere for posting a meme, especially during election cycles.
Actually I suspect it's application will be secretive like the PATRIOT act and you won't hear much about how it's used at all. -

> I hope the government doesn't misapply the law
They will.
> use these powerful tools they are giving themselves
This one is basically nothing. You are falling for the psyop.
> I generally oppose any increase in surveillance authority granted to government.
Sensible.
> Considering how often I hear people accused of shilling for Putin
IT IS VERY CLEAR THAT THIS IS ABOUT COMPANIES UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF FOREIGN ADVERSARIES
THIS IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM ACCUSING SOMEONE OF SHILLING FOR PUTIN
> Actually I suspect it's application will be secretive like the PATRIOT act and you won't hear much about how it's used at all.
It's not anywhere near that PATRIOT Act. Speaking of which, that is actual law; instead of freaking out about this one, which is nothing, maybe focus effort on rolling back the PATRIOT Act and the DMCA.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

It wasn't even on my radar until my kid mentioned it and then I saw it being referred to as PATRIOT act 2.0 around here. The fact that they are excluding the activities associated with this act from FOIA seems suspicious but maybe it's nothing.
As far as getting the PATRIOT act repealed I wouldn't even know where you would start. I am pretty sure they reauthorize it regularly which means the office holders are still in support of it. -

Some congressional representatives are willing to take up some weird single issue that matters to their district, as long as it's safely quixotic. Phone call and a letter might do it. Enough of them get on that and they might notice that they have ended up with actual momentum and at that point it's too embarrassing to back out. It sounds unlikely, but that's what happened with Brexit: the Tories hated it, but because it seemed like something that would win votes without ever going anywhere, they threw in, then they couldn't back out after the referendum passed.
My congressional representative did a town hall where she accused her constituents of being paid by Putin for not wanting to start a war with Russia, so I'm not holding out a lot of hope.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this.
