   The cloud is just someone else's computer, and they probably don't back it up as often as you'd like. Better keep those important files on a disk locally at two different locations, just in case. 😉

     The 3-2-1 rule. 3 different backups on 2 different types of media, with 1 being off-site.

     @nixCraft I use One Drive (on Linux and macOS) and trust Microsoft to back it up more often than I could manage. I have stuff that gets backed up, in significant ways, multiple times a day, and I just play video games and write fiction for fun. There's no way I could, for instance, maintain a reasonable backup at a friend's house without some technical means that are out of my (and the friend's) ability to handle, while Microsoft does it automatically.

     @nixCraft the "Cloud" exists because when the NSA started collecting the data of every citizen, Congress said, "you can't do that." The solution was to have corporations collect that data, because that's not illegal and then the NSA and anyone else can purchase that data legally. Don't put anything on the cloud, it's all a bad plan

     @nixCraft My favorite point to remind people is if your provider backs up your data, if they administratively delete your account they'll probably delete your backups at the same time.
