   So it turns out the Kinesis Freestyle Pro doesn't have any smarts in the left half. they just run the whole (well, half) keyboard matrix through the cable.

     Completely disassmbled the left half, no issues found.
     Opened right half and... WELL THERE'S YOUR PROBLEM!

     And while I'm in here: This is the main CPU: An Atmel 32UC3B0256, a 32bit AVR chip that maxes out at 60mhz.
