@arstechnica I recall thinking back in about 2010, as I was working on a device that could play both BluRay and HD DVD media (that never came to market) that it was a waste of time, both would be obsolete within 10 years as streaming takes over. Still, I like to own copies of content that I value. My PS4 is my BluRay player, and I own a still-operational Toshiba HD-DVD player !
@arstechnica because unsupported players no longer get new DRM keys as publishers rotate, nobody should use any Bluray player which doesn't have long term backing
That means the only good blueray player is a Playstation (a used PS4 should be a solid option for most, if you insist on physical) because Sony is one of the founding members for the blueray tech and the Playstation uses blueray discs, so it's getting reliable updates
