I use SyncThing to automatically sync all my images to my desktop, but for the last couple months I've been on a laptop instead of at my desktop.
Recently I've started posting camera images again, but I never got around to set up syncthing to my laptop.
Instead, I've kept it set to my desktop, but I just use SMB to get it off my desktop.
This works perfectly, but does it feel icky to you? it's... inelegant!

but every time I go to get the images and remember I have to SMB them off my desktop, I'm like "ugh, I should really set up syncthing to my laptop"

BTW, besides my problem I'm currently having because of my whole "can't use my desk" thing, I highly recommend setting up syncthing from your phone to your main PC.

you can set it up to sync when you connect to wifi, it just copies the files into the directory, over your local network: no cloud services needed, no risk of anybody seeing your files.
Which is pretty handy for your phone's camera images, you know? Zero chance of anyone seeing your naked bits, or others naked bits, or whatever it is you photograph but don't want some dork at yahoo to see.

unless they're in your network, I guess. I can't say it'll definitely be safe if your network is actively exploited. Though I think they'd need to MITM the SSL?

anyway, it's handy if you're like me and post images you should took 30 seconds ago constantly. They're just immediately on your pc for you to open in your image editor of choice.

it makes it like you have a relatively high-res webcam for your PC, it's just wirelessly portable too.

but it's also nice to know that if I drop the phone in a grate or something and it gets eating by a snake, I won't lose more than that day's images. Everything else will be backed up on the PC

which is, again, something you can easily get with cloud services. SyncThing is just nice because it does something similar without anyone else having the images.

anyway. it's a useful open source synchronization tool, and I highly recommend it for this specific case of syncing your phonecamera to a desktop/laptop.

although one warning: it synchronizes the folders, which means if you delete files from one, it deletes it from the other.
which is fine if that's what you want, but you might go "I need to free up some space on my phone: oh, I'll delete these images from my phone, they're backed up on the PC!"
no, they're /synchronized/ with the PC. That includes deletes!

There's a couple replies on that toot that'll explain how to fix that. I got called away from this thread and I've forgotten where I was going with that, and left it sounding like this was unfixable.

@foone The pc folder can be set to "ignoreDelete" to be able to clean up space on the phone without removing files on the PC. https://docs.syncthing.net/advanced/folder-ignoredelete.html
