It’s easier to point out the outlier – the least civilised, proudly, by design: the one with the largest economy in the world and yet no right to healthcare, no right to shelter, and no right to food, but the most lethal military.

No society that asks more of people than they can comfortably deliver is civilized. No society that kills people for failing to labor according to its standards is civilized.
