@EdBoatConnoisseur I actually got quite used to using vim through practicing my install and the install itself. I made my dad try it since he's getting away from windows too, and the "I can't exit vim" memes are definitely real
-
@Kyonko802 meanwhile my neovim config is available on github...
-
@Kyonko802 "VIM ###" was a possible combination of letters for license plates in a few counties in my state
pour one out for all the drivers who were left unable to leave their vehicles
-
@Kyonko802 VIM is my #1 argument for why “year of the linux desktop” is a fantasy cope
-
@TeaTootler my number one argument is that it doesn't come preinstalled on computers that are sold in stores. Normies check email and use Facebook and play phone games. Most of them wouldn't have to deal with any of the "issues" Linux presents when moving your work or game environment.
Which has always been funny to me. If computer makers sold comps with Linux they would make a little more money from not having to buy windows for every single profit turn.
-
@DarkMahesvara @TeaTootler Easy fix for that is sell them as gaming and video editing rigs. You can still sell hardware and shove OEM up peoples' asses without windows
It worked before windows started making its OS so bloated that it required the best hardware to not slow your shit to a crawl and it would work again. Customers literally dont give a shit they just want cool glowing machine or work laptop

but they would make a lot less from the forced obsolescence by it too. you need this new CPU and more ram + hardware shit like TPM or NPU. OEMs profit margins rely heavily on that.

@Spooke @Kyonko802 @TeaTootler arguably a immutable distro like the steamdeck is more reliable and robust than legacy desktop os like windows. i have yet to see anybody bricking there deck with normal usage. ofc if you wanna do stuff outside on the desktop shit can happen but thats more on the design of steamos and could be further improved on an actual desktop os similar to fedoras atomic desktops.

@DarkMahesvara @Spooke @TeaTootler My one gripe with immutable systems like steamOS is that if you do opt to unlock them they relock after an official update. I get that arch can break itself sometimes but it really doesn't happen all that often.
-
@Kyonko802 @TeaTootler they'd probably get a lot more returns though. You know because normies would just return the device for not "working" I bet since they wouldn't learn or even attempt to troubleshoot.
As much as I love my steamdeck and it's mostly It Just Works it's still more finicky than just using windows for the normie imho.
