I'm a bit sad that last.fm isn't more popular. To preempt, yes, it's still a centralized commercial company, but at least it's agnostic about where you listen to music. Instead, most people have their listening habits locked within specific streaming platforms like Spotify or YouTube Music, and rely on them to make that information available to them once a year...
I've been using last.fm since 2008 and the only device in my possession that isn't scrobbling is the record player. It is a bit amusing that for how privacy-conscious I am in all other ways I'm happy to share what I listen to, when, and how much. But that's the thing, it's my choice.
@Gargron I didn't realize this was still a thing! Thanks for pointing it out; I was a big fan around 2006-08, maybe (I remember the name change...)? New weekend project unlocked: time to reconnect with this platform.
@Gargron I always thought last.fm could have blossomed into a music-taste-centered social network with the right vision. It had a mighty network of users way before facebook took off. Instead the founders flogged it off to CBS who have no idea how to develop it (or were willing to put the cash in to try), it seems. A real shame, glad it's still around though - I love it.
@Gargron After many years as a Pro user I decided to cancel :( the price spike was too harsh for the type of value I am getting. Still really like the platform
@Gargron yeah still love last.fm as the one true source of listening stats. I looked into methods for scrobbling vinyl, and ended up using either Discographic app (if you use Discogs) or https://openscrobbler.com, which is manual, but really quick and easy.

@Gargron been scrobbling since 2005 (actually visited their offices back in the day, cool folks) and use their API (especially useful as Spotify just slammed a bunch of theirs shut with no warning). Wish it was better supported by CBS, but I guess hard to justify spending money on it. https://www.last.fm/user/Offbeatmammal
@Gargron fwiw spotify is quite a letdown when it comes to detailing what you've been listening to during the entire year; I have noticed while trying to scrape together all 2024 releases I've indulged myself into. :thinkhappy:
