   @evan I drove to Ohio Linux Fest in Columbus OH, about 880km each way. No train service. Would have been bus or plane. However, I enjoy driving and have a fun (but practical) car. If train had been available, and reasonable, I would have taken it.

     My mistake, I was thinking "at least" 250km. I didn't think it was that specific.

     @evan For a more applicable example, visiting my Mom, about 228km each way, doesn't even have a viable option for train. I would have to go to the next largest city, (5 hours or so) and have her pick me up from there, a little less then an hour each way.

     @murph It doesn't mess anything up! I'm just asking.

     For me, a trip of 250km is going to be juuuuuuuust a little bit outside my urban region. It's a good weekend or 3-day weekend trip. We have a country house about 135km away, so that's my benchmark. Ottawa is about 200km away, but about the same feel. There's a train station nearby, but it's hard to get from the station to our home, so we only take the train if someone else is already at the house.

     @evan I can't imagine that an even shorter trip would make much sense, sadly. Even in the northeast US, train travel is oddly unapproachable for me, unless I am strictly going in or out of NYC.
