    "Embrace, extend, and extinguish" (EEE), also known as "embrace, extend, and exterminate", is a phrase that the U.S. Department of Justice found was used internally by Microsoft to describe its strategy for entering product categories involving widely used open standards, extending those standards with proprietary capabilities, and using the differences to strongly disadvantage its competitors. Origin The strategy and phrase "embrace and extend" were first described outside Microsoft in a 1996 article in The New York Times titled "Tomorrow, the World Wide Web! Microsoft, the PC King, Wants to Reign Over the Internet", in which writer John Markoff said, "Rather than merely embrace and extend the Internet, the company's critics now fear, Microsoft intends to engulf it." The phrase "embrace and extend" also appears in a facetious motivational song by an anonymous Microsoft employee, and in an interview of Steve Ballmer by The New York Times.   eugen it's good news, but only in the scope of championing #activitypub
  i don't think when you made #mastodon 8 yrs ago you thought "yes! i get to work with #facebook someday!"
  i'm happy you're happy but i step back and see #threads #interop as sad
  what you and your team built is amazing and i appreciate all you've done
  because it is #decentralized
  it's not #centralized #socialmedia hell that is eating our psychology, our societies, our politics
  it should stay that way

  @Gargron @mosseri Interoperability as a general principle is a good thing (and if done on equal and equitable terms), but some of us would much prefer that our posts aren’t accessible by certain networks. Are #Mastodon posts inaccessible by #Threads by default (or would we sadly need to take some sort of definite action to prevent them from being able to access our posts)?

  I don't see this as a good thing. Facebook, Threads, Instagram etc. are so highly toxic digital spaces run by billionaires to further their own self-interests. Personally I'd prefer if the Fediverse could be run as a separate, better alternative to such spaces.

  @Gargron @mosseri ... no since they scare their users with scare page on option (last time I checked before they auto ban my account that never posted anything and blackmail the account to have ID).

  @Gargron Eugen, what steps are being taken to give Mastodon mainstream appeal? Are traditional DMs still a part of that plan? What is Mastodon doing to attain comparable mainstream appeal to Bluesky (where quite a few major news outlets are moving)? Any insight on this would be helpful.
