Hot Take:
Half-Life 2 is one of the most overrated games of all time and has contributed much to why the gaming industry is anemic and cancerous now.
- New Janny in Town likes this.

@SuperSnekFriend how can you be so brave hahaha.
Do tell your reasoning though, I'm interested to learn why.

The major tl;dr points would be:
1. The Hollywoodification of gaming
2. Steam and the bad kind of centralization (People forget that PC users hated HL2 when it came out because you were forced to use Valve's "new" platform to play the game on PC)
3. The acceptance of eternal updates/"early access" that break each major cycle (Orange Box/Steampipe/20th Ann. Update)
4. libtard and Proto-gobohomo themes and practices, like anti-authoritarianism, pro-muttification, anti-beauty, etc
5. It's a very bad sequel to HL1 (see the Examined Life of Gaming's video) and is a degress in terms of FPS gameplay, not progress
6. Contributed to the primary/secondary/tetitary or the "ironic" gamer tourist problem, several years before "Le cake is a lie" Portal 1, but to a lesser extent.
There's some minor points as well, but that can be saved whenever I make an effort post.

@professionalbigot69 @nugger
>But muh SDK
Id has called and wants their glory of easily workable gaming engines back from Valve.
-
@SuperSnekFriend @professionalbigot69 @nugger I'm gonna post this chart again because I feel like it
-
@SuperSnekFriend IT'S A CUTTING EDGE TECH SHOWCASE FROM 2004 PACKAGED INTO A LINEAR, SETPIECE BASED,
FIRST PERSON SHOOTER
GAMING INDUSTRY IS NOT ABOUT CUTTING EDGE OR LINEAR SETPIECE SHOOTERS
IT'S ALL ABOUT LOWER END, PHONE HARDWARE COMPATIBLE, GAMES AS A SERVICE
HL2 HAD ITS IMPACT, BUT IT'S NOW IRRELEVANT
-
@nugger @SuperSnekFriend YOU DIDN'T JUST GET THE PRODUCT
YOU ALSO GOT THE TOOLS TO MAKE A SIMILAR PRODUCT YOURSELF
PEOPLE KEEP FORGETTING ABOUT THE SDK AND HOW VALUABLE IT IS
-
@M_39 @Ace66062 @SuperSnekFriend episodes dont suck, but they were too short too really expand more
-
@Ace66062 @SuperSnekFriend HL1 is better, but I will always remember the part is HL2 Episode 2 where Eli says "Gordon you need to fuck my blasian daughter, Gordon. I need an Afro-Eurasian grandchild, Gordon. We Kalergimaxxing up in here, fr." Powerful stuff. The episodes still fucking suck, though.

@SuperSnekFriend >HL2 is overrated
true! HL1 mogs it
>and has contributed much to why the gaming industry is anemic and cancerous now

@Ace66062
Counter-Strike, up to GO, and TF1 aren't Valve's creation. They were published by Valve. As an avid Counter-Strike player back in the day, CS:GO had been a net negative, with the match-making system killing off private servers.
And while TF2 and Portal are good games by themselves, do you really think the trend of micro-transactions brought by the TF2 hat economy or the retarded normie-fication of gaming from the stupid Portal memes were good things?
-
@SuperSnekFriend @Ace66062 CS:S was made by Valve, Turtle Rock only made some maps for the game. Maps like de_dust2 were ported to Source in-house by Valve

@Ace66062
You can't convince me otherwise that Valve's meta actions have been an overall net negative towards gaming as a whole. :raphpout:
The only net positive thing is the promotion of Linux gaming in the last couple of years, but that is almost twenty years too late.
-
@SuperSnekFriend I will give you a crumb that Valve's meta actions for video games were a double-edged sword as they completely redefined presenting narratives in video games at the cost of other developers trying to mimic and fail at what made this so impressive and enjoyable though there were still games that did it pretty well like Halo's campaign and FEAR (Halo was also a double edged sword since it lead to the trend of space marine cover shooter).
And this is only talking about HL1 and 2, are CS games, TF1 and 2 and Portal 1 and 2 a "net negative" towards gaming now?
