This is a completely unedited clip of a portion of Adobe's visit to Linus Media Group on April 11, 2016 Linus gives his thoughts on Adobe Prelude. This is a dedicated ingest computer for all our footage and SD cards. It runs Adobe prelude and adobe media encoder. It has 36 CPU cores. We made a video about it, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ96fLCGFRw We use Prelude to make a backup of the original video files, AND to transcode to cineform, dropping the files into their appropriate folder on the server. Unfortunately, even after a LOT of revisions and work on the system, it is still not perfect. Even with 36 CPU cores, Prelude and Media encoder are often slow, laggy, buggy, and frustrating to use. Linus talks about how he prefers Explorer's interface to Prelude, because of the clear file path, easy navigation, quick access bar, fast loading of files, folders, and thumbnails... and probably a few more reasons. The most important feature we need from Prelude, is "a green light" We need the software to carefully check, and give us a guarantee that an SD card has been successfully copied / backed up / transcoded, so that we know it is OK to reformat that card. Currently, Prelude does not at all make it clear what files have been finished. And if there is a problem, you're never sure WHAT files have gone wrong, and you're not sure what to do to fix it. There is an error message that pops up, but especially if someone else began that transfer, it's very unclear what needs to be done to ensure the process, whatever it was, gets done correctly. There's no "try again" button or anything. For example, sometimes our cineform files will be much shorter than the original video files. Only a portion of the video will transcode, and the remainder will just be missing. Even small annoyances with Prelude --- like the fact that every time you tell it where you want your transcoded files to go, it starts you at the root of C:, rather than the last location you transoded to --- really make prelude frustrating to use. Frankly, I (Taran) find the program so frustrating, I try to avoid using it as much as possible. I can't even give very good feedback as to why. So hopefully Linus' ideas have some more coherency. from clip: MVI 0446.mp4
