Scammers steal over $1 trillion dollars (WTF?) a year from people, and phone calls are their favorite way to do it. Now, Google rolls out call screening feature to fight scammers. New intelligent, real-time protections on Android to keep you safe https://security.googleblog.com/2024/11/new-real-time-protections-on-Android.html
@nixCraft "Scam Detection is off by default, and you can decide whether you want to activate it for future calls."
"The AI detection model and processing are fully on-device, which means that no conversation audio or transcription is stored on the device, sent to Google servers or anywhere else, or retrievable after the call."
Why do they have it off by default if it doesn't send any telemetry data to Google?
This just ensures the most vulnerable populations (i.e. old people) won't use it 🤦♂️
This is what Google says: The AI detection model and processing are fully on-device, which means that no conversation audio or transcription is stored on the device, sent to Google servers or anywhere else, or retrievable after the call.
@nixCraft This feature analyzes the caller's speech to detect if it is a spam.
Another feature (or the extension of this feature) transcribes the caller's speech and notifies the receiver to decide if the receiver wants to answer the call. After the receiver decides to answer the call, (ideally) the call is back into the basic phone/call app.
So, assuming the basic phone/call app is secure, this feature is risky to the caller and not the receiver.
