Slackware is a Linux distribution created by Patrick Volkerding in 1993. It is the oldest distro still in existence. However, someone was dissatisfied with Slackware and created another distro a month later, in August 1993. This was Debian, the second oldest distro, founded by Ian Murdock. Both of these distros are still maintained, and Debian is often known as the "mother distro" because it has spawned many more distributions. #Linux #OpenSource #history

nixCraft 🐧 (nixcraft@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 11-Nov-2024 23:56:57 JST nixCraft 🐧 Softlanding Linux System (SLS) was the first distro in 1992, but it was buggy. So, it led to the creation of Slackware and Debian. I had never used SLS, so I started with Slackware.

nixCraft 🐧 (nixcraft@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Nov-2024 00:03:19 JST nixCraft 🐧 Debra Lynn (gf and later wife) wasn't directly involved in the Debian project itself. She was the inspiration for the name. Debra ("Deb") Lynn + Ian ("Ian" Murdock) == Debian. He combined their names and the rest is the history.

Justus Rajan (joshr846@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Nov-2024 00:13:14 JST Justus Rajan @nixCraft Hi, I'm just a general user coming from the proprietary crowd who got into FOSS and Linux since 2017. I really enjoy the freedom of Linux. But one thing that really struck me as odd is that Linux is known for being the most stable OS, but I've almost always run into issues, including full OS crashes after updates and such. I've tried Ubuntu, Manjaro, Fedora and Endeavour.

On a re-read I see you actually said oldest still shipping. I must have picked up the first in my head elsewhere.

James Mitchell (wotsac@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Nov-2024 00:20:06 JST James Mitchell @nixCraft I used SLS. I don't really remember if it was buggy or not - remember that everything in free *nix land was a mess in 1992 - they were basically inventing a third way of OS architecture from scratch with toothpicks and bailing wire.

The Penguin of Evil (etchedpixels@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Nov-2024 00:33:08 JST The Penguin of Evil I love the way bogus.org is still the Bogus linux distribution (first with an actual package manager) even though it's not been updated since 1994 and the site hasn't changed since 2003 except to add https:// support
Still in existence, still available, not terribly useful but it's the mother of actual Linux package management.

I had crates of floppy disks from various versions of SLS in '92 and '93. Each version was around thirty 3.5" disks.CD-roms were so nice afterwards.

awb (awb@mastodon.sdf.org)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Nov-2024 05:00:23 JST awb @nixCraft Here is an SLS ad from Byte September 1993. At $99 that was about the same price as Mark Williams Coherent, the other popular Unix clone for PCs at the time (although it was more limited in its features.) SCO Unix/386, which was an SVR3.2 port, would cost you upwards of $2,000.
