Folks, JAWS is a screen reader. Should be free. Isn’t because, hey, isn’t capitalism just wonderful?
Please help Mendi out here if you can.

@aral need more folks to help work on NVDA to help it replace JAWS in more use cases https://www.nvaccess.org/
@arkd It blows my fucking mind that these tools are not 100% funded by our taxes. wtf, capitalism, wtf!
@aral Recently I attended a11y training run by a blind person (in Poland). He told us that the prices also differ depending on the county and that the license for JAWS in Poland is... 1000$ + about 120$ every year. That's shitload of money. Yes, there is a government funding (not sure if covers 100%), but still.
Apparently, there are alternatives (like Apple's reader or open source NVDA), but JAWS seems to be the best one, preferred by users.
@projectmoon @arkd We have a lot of money. Sadly, most of it is being spent on killing machines to murder Brown people on the other side of the world. Making screen readers free would be a rounding error in public spending.
@aral@mastodon.ar.al @arkd@mastodon.design I am not entirely surprised or necessarily opposed to a good screen reader costing money. It's basically a medical device, and those cost money to create. What would make a lot of sense, and maybe is done some places, is to subsidize it via prescription.
