Talking to friends on messenger is something I miss dearly
All these modern social apps are too intrusive and public
I miss talking to friends one-on-one on a simple interface without all the modern fluff

@Meemoo MSN was considered to be for teenage girls. Most people in my circle stuck with ICQ.
The best feature of ICQ was that you could send SMS messages to cellphones for free.

@Tamamo most of us here used MSN to avoid paying SMS tolls so ICQ wasn't a consideration for the most part.
Shit was expensive af.
I once lost a friendship because my SMS got cut in half due to running out of balance and I didn't have money to recharge to get what I wanted to say across until it was too late :emoji_seethe:

@Meemoo ICQ had another nice perk over MSN. You could send messages to offline people and they'd see it when they went online.
For some reason allot of other instant messengers never implanted this simple feature.

Same here. Most of us had had pre-paid plans which were expensive as fuck for call minutes and SMS to push you into taking a contract.
But even contracts often had a fixed number of SMS per month and if you went over that you'd get bend over the barrel if you send SMS outside your bundle.
Unless you blocked being able to send SMS outside your bundle but of course you had to go out of your way to enable that.
There were so many horror stories of teenagers getting massive cellphone bills back then.
