In the past few weeks, Apple canceled the following:
a) A multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI
b) Apple officially cancels autonomous driving permit (Apple already scrapped its self-driving electric car project after ten years of research)
c) Apple engineers confirmed that AIs don't understand reasoning and stuff like that.
While the whole tech industry is going AI-first, Apple is more cautious and isn't buying AI buzz. What do you think this indicates?

Unlike OpenAI and other AI companies, Apple has the money to invest heavily in research & product development. It also has a deep understanding of the current limitations of technology. Apple seems to believe that achieving AGI-level AI is not possible in the near future.
Moreover, there is significant *negativity* surrounding LLMs such as
- Copyright infringement
- Job displacement
- Economic impact on artists
- Environmental concern (increased energy consumption & carbon emissions)

@nixCraft Apple is waiting for someone else to do the hard work building AI then will swoop in and buy it if there's ever an attractive opportunity for them.
In the meantime, they can give back to their big shareholders and executives who obviously need the money more.

@nixCraft . that's the positive interpretation, it could also be argued they missed they boat and are becoming nothing more then a producer of excellent but boring hardware, the latest iphone was a disappointment according to most commentators.
The only advantage they have in my view is their enormous cash and financial position, but they have no edge in hardware, software or data when it's about AI.

Sama met Tim Cook multiple times to convince him to invest in OpenAI. Currently, OpenAI is giving Apple free API access. Apple even refused to buy its API service. Yeah, it is safe to assume Apple and Tim Cook know the current LLM limitations very well and are not burning money on a fool's dream or some AI hype. The only winner so far is NVidia, as they are making money from selling those GPUs. Apart from that, every AI company is burning investors' money.

@nixCraft the two good things I have to say about apple is that their M chips are good, and they are better about respecting privacy.
i still prefer Linux though 😃

@nixCraft Self-Driving cars will work one day. All we have to do is completely redesign and rebuild the entirety of our infrastructure so there are clear road marks for them to follow. So easy. It will only cost trillions of dollars and take decades. Of course, this will be easy to achieve politically in today's environment. Should happen any day now.

@shironeko @krzyzanowskim they are using gemini and openai API, so yeah they are just selling it as features but not building a massive datacenter just for LLM. Pretty cautious approach

@nixCraft I started working with artificial neural networks over twenty five years ago. Among others, I used the same ones for which Drs. Hopfield and Hinton were awarded the Nobel prize. Once trained, each layer is just a set of numbers in a weight matrix. LLMs are just huge versions of the same, using up huge amounts of energy to determine the weights. There is no “consciousness” in there anywhere.
