Started Octopath 2 and maybe it's just the paths where I started, but holy shit did they go grimdark with this. The first one could certainly be dark, but what I've seen is darker and more depressing than that.

@Lavaearth Yeah, it's pretty similar to the first one in most respects.

@ArdainianRight Is It good at least?

@ArdainianRight haven't gotten myself to play through 1, jrpgs have lost their magic for me I'm afraid

@ArdainianRight I remember Primrose's path ending up really dark and depressing, in stark contrast to the other "revenge story", Olberic's, which ended up being quite uplifting.
I give Octopath a lot of shit, primarily for its ultra-formulaic structure, lack of overarching story and character connections, and the crappy, mega-overrated HD-2D art style, but one thing I really did appreciate was just how different in tone the different character stories were. The range between Tressa's story and Primrose's story is HUGE.

@ChristiJunior Yeah. Ochette is an impossibly cute beast girl who likes meat, and she massively lifts up the mood. On the other hand Osvald's story basically starts out in the Gulag Archipelago. So the tonal clash is still there.
