Here's a list of popular games (with the arbitrary metric of "smugumin can recognize them") made by a solo dev, broken down by engine:
-UNITY Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy Thomas Was Alone Return of the Obra Dinn Helltaker Chillas Art Slop? 2 asian dudes in Unity. That sissyphus game? Unity.
-RPG Maker: Andy And Leyley Lisa?
-GameMakerStudio: Undertale (not actually made by 1 person)
-Godot: Cruelty Squad?
-Unreal: Could not find any. Just copy Only Up and Chained Together i guess.
Looks clear to me what the best game engine is :jahy_smug: "B-But what about making your own en-" No.
@smugumin while i couldn’t confirm them myself, i think it’s reasonable to assume that just based from the length and content alone, most of games made by rpg maker are made by a solo dev until explicitly proven otherwise
ofc you’d then be limited to making an actual rpg game, or a horror game, or both at the same time, but i think there’s still potential sales to be had within that niche*
@smugumin >What's the best game engine to start making You're probably going to sample a few tutorials without committing too hard, then pick the most comfortable one >and selling games as a solo dev? That part is about licensing autism (how much would you owe the engine) along with how lenient or easy to use the platform (steam, itch.io - pic related) is. You'll still need a game that people -or unsupervised children with access to credit cards, see yanderedev- want to pay for. Also like that retard from youtube, piratesoftware says: "don't quit your real job".
