When Jim Spencer, director of Rare Book Auctions, heard 24-year-old Mat Winter’s claim that he found an engraving by German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer at the dump, he was skeptical. “I opened the package, removed the bubble wrap and staggered back in awe,” Spencer said.
